The Label
The art displayed on this label is Jungle Fowl (2001) by Robert Bateman. Domesticated fowl are grazed in Summerhill's organic Okanagan vineyards to aid in pest control and soil fertility. Summerhill is proud to give a portion of the price of this wine to fund the Bateman Foundation's pro-nature initiatives. - Pairing

John Szabo, MS. Fermented and aged 9 months in new, 1000l French oak casks, this is intriguing, chewy (unfined, unfiltered, I would guess, now throwing sediment) merlot, with some volatile-acetone-shoe polish character, black fruit, ripe but mostly dried fruit flavours. The palate shows a mid-weight frame with supple tannins, baked blueberry pie and pie crust, not unlike aged sangiovese from Tuscany, a strange but apt comparison. An idiosyncratic wine all in all, challenging in the intellectual sense, stretching definitions and paradigms. Take some time with this - there's a lot of complexity on offer. Tasted October 2020.

Summerhill Pyramid Winery features organic and biodynamic wine grown in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in Kelowna, British Columbia. Organic practices have been an integral part of Summerhill since the Kelowna vineyard was purchased by the Cipes family in 1986. Producing wine organically has a very meaningful benefit to the environment, and some scientists suggest that eating organic foods greatly benefits our health as well.
